One of the most common questions from students preparing for a German language exam in India: should I take the Goethe exam or the telc exam? The short answer is that both are globally recognised and both test the same CEFR standard — but they differ in practical ways that matter when you're planning your preparation in India.
What Are Goethe and telc?
Goethe-Zertifikat exams are issued by the Goethe-Institut, Germany's official cultural and language institute. They are available from A1 to C2 and are recognised globally as the gold standard for German language certification. In India, Goethe-Institut has exam centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune.
telc Deutsch (The European Language Certificates) exams are issued by telc GmbH, a Frankfurt-based organisation. They are available from A1 to C1 and are accepted by German embassies, universities, and employers across Europe. In India, telc exams are available at a wider network of licensed centres beyond just the Goethe-Institut cities.
Are They Equally Accepted?
For most purposes in India, yes. German embassies, Ausbildung employers, and most German universities accept both Goethe and telc certificates at equivalent levels. The level matters more than the issuing board — a telc B1 and a Goethe B1 are treated as equivalent.
There are some specific exceptions worth knowing:
- German citizenship (Einbürgerung): German authorities most commonly request the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 specifically. While telc B1 may be accepted in some cases, Goethe is the safer choice for citizenship applications.
- Nursing and healthcare Ausbildung: Some employers and states specify telc Deutsch B2 (Pflege) — a healthcare-specific variant of the B2 exam. This is telc-only and does not have a Goethe equivalent.
- German university admission: Most universities accept both Goethe B2 and telc B2. Some additionally accept TestDaF (a separate academic German exam). Check your specific university's language requirements page.
Practical Differences in India
Exam availability and dates
Goethe-Institut exams are only available at official Goethe-Institut centres — seven cities in India. Exam slots are limited and fill quickly, especially in Delhi. telc exams are available at a wider network of licensed centres across India, including Tier 2 cities, with more frequent exam dates throughout the year.
Cost
Goethe exams typically cost 15–25% more than equivalent telc exams in India. For a full fee breakdown by level, see: German exam fees in India 2026.
Exam format
Both follow the CEFR framework and test the same four skills (Lesen, Hören, Schreiben, Sprechen). The task formats are slightly different between Goethe and telc — the question types, number of tasks, and time allocations vary. At BoloGerman, Bobby prepares students for both exam formats, using authentic past papers from each board.
Pass criteria
Both require a pass in each section (typically 60%) and an overall pass. You cannot compensate a weak section with a strong section in either exam.
Bobby's Recommendation
In most cases, Bobby recommends checking your specific requirement first — visa, employer, or university — and choosing based on that. If both are accepted and you have flexibility:
- Choose Goethe if: you need the exam for citizenship, you want the most internationally recognised certificate, or your target country or institution specifically requests it.
- Choose telc if: you need a healthcare B2 Pflege variant, you want more exam dates and centres to choose from, or Goethe slots in your city are full.
Not sure which to take? Mention your visa or Ausbildung goal in the free 15-minute assessment call — Bobby will confirm which exam your specific application needs before you register.
