Frequently Asked Questions — A1

No — A1 is a complete beginner level. We start from zero: the alphabet, basic greetings, numbers, and the simplest sentence patterns. No prior exposure to German is needed.
Both Goethe-A1 and telc-A1 are equally accepted for Au Pair visas and family reunification visas at the German Embassy in India. Bobby will advise you on which exam centre has availability closest to your city and best suits your timeline.
With our focused coaching, most students starting from zero pass A1 in 2–3 months. The Goethe-Institut estimates 80–100 total study hours for the A1 level. Our curriculum is designed to reach that standard efficiently.
All classes are conducted fully online in small group batches. Students from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and across India join the same batch. You need a stable internet connection and a device with a microphone for speaking sessions.
Bobby will briefly assess your current German level (if any), understand your visa or goal timeline, confirm A1 is the right level for you, and explain batch timings, fees, and next steps. There is no obligation to join.

The Goethe / telc A1 Exam — Format & What to Expect

The A1 exam tests basic survival German — introductions, simple transactions, and understanding short everyday texts.

Lesen (Reading)

3 tasks. Short everyday texts — signs, notices, short messages. You identify key information from simple written German. Time: approximately 20 minutes.

Hören (Listening)

3 tasks. Short conversations and announcements, played twice. Tests basic comprehension of spoken German in familiar situations. Time: approximately 20 minutes.

Schreiben (Writing)

1–2 tasks. Fill in a form and write a very short note or message in response to a simple prompt. Time: approximately 20 minutes.

Sprechen (Speaking)

3 short tasks — introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, make a request. Conducted with a partner or examiner. Most students find this easier than expected when well-practised.

The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (Start Deutsch 1) and telc Deutsch A1 test the same CEFR level. Both are accepted by German embassies for family reunion and spouse visa applications. Exam centres are available across India — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and more.

How to Register for the A1 Exam in India

1

Choose: Goethe or telc

Common A1 Mistakes Indian Students Make

10+ years of coaching A1 students shows the same patterns again and again — the course addresses every one of them directly.

Getting der / die / das wrong

German noun genders don't follow simple rules. Indian students often skip memorising them, then lose marks in reading and writing tasks. We build gender memory into every vocabulary session from day one.

Translating word-for-word from Hindi or English

German sentence structure — especially verb placement — is different from Hindi and English. We drill the verb-second rule until it becomes natural, not something you consciously think about.

Ignoring pronunciation early

A1 Sprechen is graded on comprehensibility. Students who skip pronunciation practice in the first month find it harder to fix later. We start pronunciation correction from class one.

Not practising the Schreiben format

The writing task has a specific structure — greeting, purpose, sign-off. Students who haven't practised this format under time pressure lose easy marks even with decent German.

Yes — A1 is the standard German language requirement for Au Pair visas to Germany. The German embassy requires a Goethe or telc A1 certificate as part of the visa application. Bobby has coached many students specifically for this requirement.
Yes — the German spouse visa (Ehegattennachzug) requires A1 as proof that you can communicate at a basic level in German. The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 (Start Deutsch 1) is the most commonly requested exam for this purpose.
Most students attend 2–3 hours of live online classes per week and spend an additional 1–2 hours on self-study (worksheets, vocabulary review). Consistent daily practice of even 20–30 minutes makes a significant difference at A1 level.
